Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is being developed by Mythic Entertainment, and is set to be released in the second quarter of 2008. This game is a highly anticipated release and is expected to be a serious challenge for dominance of the MMORPG genre.
The game is based off the popular game series developed by Games Workshop Limited in the early 1980's. Warhammer Online has undergone several incarnations in the past few years. The attempts to develop the game began in 2000, but after several failed attempts by other companies, Mythic Entertainment has successfully taken up this challenge.
The characters and races of the game are robust and well developed. This is the result of the massive material available to draw upon from the table top games. There are currently six races in the game that will be playable when the game is released. These include Chaos (Evil Human), Dark Elves, Dwarfs, Empire (Human), Greenskins (Orcs), and High Elves. Each of these races is highly distinctive and offer varying types of game play. Players will begin the game in the racial starting areas and will be pitted against their traditional enemies, but players will be free to travel to other areas and explore.
It will also feature RvR, or Realm vs. Realm?, combat. The goal in the game is eventually capturing and sacking of the enemies capital city. This is done by invading and holding the enemies territory. Battles will be fought on objective-based battlefields and instanced scenarios. Instanced scenarios will be point based battles that use NPC mercenaries called Dogs of War.
Warhammer Online gold, through the use of its RvR system will combine both Player vs. Player (PvP) and Player vs. Player (PvE) quests into the same map area. Players will not be required to participate in PvP if they do not choose to, and will be able to participate in the war effort entirely through PvE gaming. Both styles of combat will be in support of the overall RvR war goal of capturing the opposing side's capital city.
